Revealing Hvar's Autumn Best Kept Secrets: Hooked on Squid Fishing

Visit Hvar in October and experience the romantic scene of a sea populated by lights coming out from squid fishing boats.

Peskafondo 2014 Gariful Hvar is a sport and gastronomic hands-on event where you can catch squids (sometimes even with bare hands), see the course of squids drying and most importantly taste delicious squid dishes. It is an event enjoyed by both local residents and tourists, being held in October every year.  The festival, already an icon of the island of Hvar is organized by Gariful Restaurant with the support of the city of Hvar and Croatian interest groups caterers. The anticipated duration of the event is of two days during which the best Croatian fishermen, chefs, cooks amateurs and caterers will be showcasing.

Scores of anglers from across Croatia and worldwide travel sometimes even hundreds of miles and book hotels for the event at which a coveted trophy is awarded for the biggest squid caught.

The main happening of the event - squid fishing - will take place on Friday and Saturday in the afternoon and evening. Participants can enter as teams of max. 3 persons and can use their own boat or a ship can be provided by the organizer as well. Participants start the contest at 4.30 p.m. in front of the restaurant Gariful. After returning at 8 p.m. the catch (squid only) is weighed by the main committee of the competition and afterwards the event proceeds at various locations of the city of Hvar: Gariful Restaurant, Central Piazza and the City lodge.

The most interesting part is the euphoria around the stories about the tactics, tools and all possible ways of squid catching and of course the assessment of young talents.

The event is as well followed by the Croatian National Television and is featured in the tv show “More” which gathers all of the information and events concerning the Adriatic Sea.
