This season, residents and visitors to the island of Hvar will have the opportunity to attend the first "Festival of Mediterranean Cuisine," organized by the Association “Winemakers of Hvar”.

The sardine is a very important foodstuff for all islanders, just as it has been throughout history and today it deserves to be the theme of the very first “Festival of Mediterranean Cuisine”, and with it goes an essential element, the high quality wines of Hvar.

Guests will enjoy tasting wines from Hvar with live music, participate in various workshops, visit the exhibition and see cultural and historical heritage, all in cooperation with the Museum of the Municipality of Hvar and of Stari Grad.

The goal of this event is to spread public awareness of the traditional values that the Mediterranean diet reflects and generates.

The Croatian Mediterranean diet has been listed with the other six countries on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, and the representatives are the islands of Brač and Hvar.

The festival is international in character but this year the emphasis will be on Italy, because we have artists arriving from Cerealije, who are performing two performances, "Nunc est bibendum" and "Colors of food". A famous anthropologist, Ernesto Di Renzo, will speak at a roundtable about the Mediterranean diet, together with Croatian lecturers of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore, and the island's experts on topics about food culture.

The round table is organized by the Association “Winemakers of Hvar” and the Agency for the Management of Stari Grad Plain.

The festival begins with an evening of Bogdanuša (a white grape variety originating in Hvar) in Svirče, and it continues with tastings in Stari Grad, Vrboska and Jelsa, with a rich cultural entertainment program that follows events and gastronomic offers in prominent restaurants in Hvar.
