On Hvar almost every stone has an ancient story, yet lives in the present

The high walls of a secluded monastery, obscured among the other stone houses of the town centre, hide Benedictine nuns from the rest of the world. Due to the fact that their order forbids them ever to exit the monastery, their existence is visible to the public only via exquisite and high-quality lace patterns sold as unique works of art. However, their prayers echo through the city streets early in the morning together with the church bell.

Easter in Hvar is a special celebration centred on the over 400-year-old ‘Following the Cross’ procession. Beginning in the evening of Good Thursday and continuing into the early morning hours of Good Friday, this procession expresses plebeian reverence for the Passion of Jesus Christ. Visitors can take part in this unique tradition and experience this precious and divine moment firsthand.

The first public theatre in Europe was built in Hvar in 1612. Today, UNESCO protects this glorious institution and on its stage, actors re-enact vibrant scenes from the time in which it was built. The mausoleum of Hanibal Lučić (Croatian renaissance poet and drama writer), the Palace of Paladini and Church of St. Marco will greet curious eyes with sophisticated stone dignity and stories continuing from days gone by.
