Spotted in Hvar
For a Dalmatian island that has traditionally eked out a harsh existence based on olives, wine, lavender and fishing, Hvar has an exclusive image which has attracted many celebrities. Home to the oldest organized tourism in Europe, Hvar Town has been receiving distinguished guests since the arrival of Hapsburg Emperor Franz Josef I in 1875.
According to the records of the Hvar Town Tourist Board, the following illustrious visitors have enjoyed the lush greens sceneries and Mediterranean flair of this remarkable island.
It is worth noting that one of the attractions of Hvar for celebrities is the laid-back reception they receive from local people.
A-List Stars from Hollywood to the world’s best dance arenas
Ever since Orson Welles filmed The Deep on Hvar in the 1960s, the island has attracted A-list stars from the world of movies. With its stunning scenery and historical towns, Hvar is an ideal film set (Ashley Judd was filming her ABC series “Missing” in 2012 on Hvar) one which could command an all-star cast from its previous guests. Visitors have included Clint Eastwood, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, John Malkovich, Brad Pitt, Jodie Foster, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stephen Spielberg, George Clooney and Jack Nicholson, while Kevin Spacey made world headlines during his visit in 2008. Eva Longoria celebrated her wedding anniversary with Tony Parker and Tom Cruise was followed to the island by a ladies entourage after his split from Katie Holmes. Pregnant superstar Beyoncé has extended her birthday celebrations by travelling to Croatia to soak up the sun with her husband Jay-Z. On their European getaway, Beyoncé and Jay-Z spent few relaxing days on Croatia's sunniest island of Hvar. Aunt-to-be Solange also joined the family affair, tweeting, “Croatia is breathtaking. Paradise!”
Hvar Mayor has granted their daughter Blue Ivy the status of honorary citizen of the town because of the story of the origin of girl's name which has brought huge media attention and great tourism promotion to the town of Hvar. In 2014, Keira Knightley enjoyed her sunny-weather escape together with husband James Righton at one of Croatia's top rated beach hotels, the Amfora Grand Beach Resort. For the joy of female visitors, Keira was followed by one of the hottest Hollywood's actors, Sam Worthington, who chose the charming island for his island getaway. Hollywood power couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi spent a joyful summer afternoon in 2014 strolling through the Hvar promenade as well as Los Angeles Clippers basketball player Blake Griffin. The “50 shades of gray” Novelist E.L. James who became famous by her S&M love trilogy hung out with her fans on Hvar, maybe in search for a new novel inspiration. The American-Canadian actress Laurie Holden chose Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel for her island getaway because of its ideal location steps from the old city center and everything Hvar town has to offer. To remember us of the ideal summer romance we have to mention the kiss Jacqueline M. Wood gave to a boy at a pool in Hvar which aired on Party ON E! Channel series. And the last but not the least, the DJ scene featuring Steve Aoki chilling at the Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort pool, Roger Sanchez lounging at Riva Hotel BB Lounge Bar and Boy George spinning some tunes at the hype The Top bar on the fourth floor of Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel.
The James Bond Appreciation Society
Local observers could be forgiven for thinking a British espionage conspiracy was afoot on the island given the number of secret agents that have holidayed on Hvar. No less than three James Bonds - Sean Connery, Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan have soaked up the rays on Europe's sunniest island, as have at least two Bond girls, Gemma Arterton and Michelle Yeon.
Sporting Stars on Hvar
From sport, Hvar seems to provide a particular attraction to tennis players, with Croatian legends Goran Ivanisevic and Iva Majoli spotted on the waterfront, as have been Andre Agassi, Jennifer Capriati and Gabriela Sabatini. World No. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, enjoyed his well-deserved vacation in Hvar. Other sporting stars who have spent time on Hvar are David Beckham and from the world of motor racing Bernie Ecclestone, Eddie Jordan and Michael Schumacher. Wonder who said "Girls in Croatia are beautiful, but they are too tall for us Spanish guys"? Who else than Manchester United and Spain football star Juan Mata.
Continuing the Royal Tradition
The royal tradition has been continued by King Abdullah of Jordan, Prince Klaus of Holland and Princess Caroline of Monaco, and some of the world's richest men - Bill Gates and Roman Abramovich - have sailed into the Hvar harbour.
From the world of music, Hvar has glimpsed Simon Le Bon as well as other celebrities Nicky Hilton, Ivana Trump (whose ex-husband Donald Trump owns a large hunting concession on Hvar) and Saif Al-Islam, son of the current Libyan leader.
The relaxed approach to celebrities is good news for holidaymakers to see someone famous. With Hvar making the recent Sunday Times list of Top 100 Affordable Places on the Med and praises in world renowned magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Conde Nast and AskMen.com, there can be few other places where backpackers can mix so freely with the stars.
