A Day in the Life on Hvar
Hvar’s pulse starts to beat around ten in the morning, which marks the arrival of the first catamaran. This is a great time to sit on the terrace at Café Pjaca, read the paper and drink a fresh cup of coffee. It is also an opportunity to meet some locals and find out about secret swimming coves and special events. By noon most visitors have ventured off to the Paklinski islands for a day of fun in the sun, which is ultimately followed by a siesta lasting until about 5 p.m. If by chance you find yourself wandering around the city at this time of day, locals may greet you with the phrase “pomalo” which translates to “take it easy” or “slow down”.
Evening brings its own vibe. Usually it begins with an après beach party and segues into a feast of domestic seafood specialties and wine. After-supper activities include world-class concerts, theatre, and of course clubs, where cool cocktails give way to dance parties on the waterfront. The first rays of the new day remind people that they had better get some sleep or “kill an eye” as the Croats say, but not before ducking into a bakery for some warm, fresh-baked pastries.
