Hvar in a Day: Through the lense of our Marketing Coordinator

After I had found out I had gotten the job as marketing coordinator for Suncani Hvar Hotels, I wasn't sure what to expect.  I'd never been to Hvar island before, but I heard many good things about the place.  Of course most of the stories were about celebrities and royalty visiting, like the time Prince Harry partied at the Veranda nightclub, and then took a dip in the swimming pool fully clothed.  Celebrities aside, I wanted to find out what the magic was.  Was it the magical town square?  The famous Hvar theatre, which is said to be the oldest in Europe?  Or could it be the Hvar fortress? After arriving, I noticed that the charm of Hvar was everything combined.  All of its unique aspects make up the one-of-a-kind atmosphere that can only be found on the island.

The morning started out cloudy and windy, and as I stepped outside of the Riva hotel where I'm staying, I spotted two fishermen in their boat parked in the harbor.  They were dressed in typical fishermen winter wear, complete with rain coats and navy blue knitted hats.  They were arguing amongst each other, complaining about the bad weather.  The bad weather was interfering with their catch it seemed, scaring the fish away.  As the morning went on, the marketplace was bustling with merchants selling locally grown vegetables, as well as baskets in every shape imaginable.  Bakeries were full of freshly-baked croissants and strudels, the smell floating into the street.  Hvar had turned alive, locals going about their daily lives, but without rush and without stress.

As the day went on, I began to notice things about the island that it was so famed for.  The locals from what I could see, seemed to value taking their time with things.  Coffee breaks were something that couldn't be missed, and it was also a time that was spent to catch up with friends and plan for the day.  Relaxing and enjoying life is something that is valued on the island, and it also inspired me to take things one step at a time and to enjoy the moment.  Whether it is watching the waves crash against the shore, hearing the bells coming from St. Stephen's church, or seeing the theatre lit up at night in all its glory, Hvar really leaves an imprint that won't soon be forgotten.
